What Is Controlled Low-Strength Material (CLSM)?

Controlled Low-Strength Material (CLSM) is a self-consolidating, cement-based sand slurry used as backfill or structural fill, replacing compacted borrow or native material. It is ideal for hard-to-reach areas where specific PSI compaction is required. CLSM is typically mixed at 75–150 PSI unless otherwise specified.

This versatile material is a popular alternative to compacting in lifts with tampers. It is commonly used behind retaining walls, cattle passes, or culverts. It is also effective for backfilling abandoned septic tanks, leach lines, and waterlines.

CLSM provides sufficient strength to support structures while remaining soft enough for future excavation using small equipment, such as a backhoe or skid steer.
